Where the foodie goes: Santa Teca

During my vacation in Spain this year we accidentally discovered this little gem. We were going to visit the monastery of Escornalbou because we heard it has some astonishing views. While arriving we noticed that there were a lot of cars parked which we found quite surprising since it isn't that big of a touristic attraction. After entering the monastery itself we finally found out that there was a cultural and gastronomical happening going on that weekend. There was a small food market which offered gastronomical takes on some Spanish classics and local wines and beers. Beside food, you could also enjoy plays, circus acts and music on different places scattered all over the monastery site.

Tijdens mijn vakantie in Spanje stootten we per ongeluk op dit pareltje. We waren van plan het klooster van Escornalbou te bezoeken omdat we gehoord hadden dat je je daar aan prachtige vergezichten kon vergapen. We merkten echter snel dat er heel wat auto's op de parking geparkeerd stonden wat we wat vreemd vonden gezien dit het geen grote toeristische trekpleister is. Nadat we het klooster zelf betraden, bleek dat er in dat weekend een culturele en gastronomische happening plaatsvond! Er was een kleine food market die verschillende gastronomische versies van Spaanse klassiekers serveerde en waar je enkele lokale wijnen en bieren kon proeven. Naast eten, kon je ook genieten van toneelstukken, muziek en circusacts die plaatsvonden op verschillende plekken verspreid over het domein.

The monastery itself could also be visited for free during this weekend which is something you should do as well if it is only to be blown away by the amazing views and the surrounding nature. While climbing to the highest point - for which you'll have to walk a small and at times wonky path - you'll be greeted by numerous variants of butterflies. On the top there's a picturesque little church and of course you'll be able to enjoy some more breathtaking views.

Het klooster zelf is tijdens dit weekend ook gratis te bezoeken en is zeker iets waar je even tijd voor moet vrijmaken; al is het enkel om van de geweldige panorama's en de omringende natuur te genieten. Terwijl je naar het hoogste punt op weg bent - waarvoor je een smal en oneffen pad moet bewandelen - word je door verschillende vlindersoorten begroet. Bovenaan staat een pittoresk kerkje en kan je uiteraard weer genieten van enkele adembenemende vergezichten.
