Mijn eerste “Where the foodie goes” artikel is er en ik hoop dat er nog vele mogen volgen! In dit nieuw segment neem ik jullie mee op sleeptouw doorheen de stad die ik bezocht. Ik vermeld de leuke plekjes die het bezoeken waard zijn, maar ga ook op zoek naar al het lekkers die de bestemming te bieden heeft. Voor mijn eerste artikel trok ik naar Venetië waar ik van de cultuur en de smakelijke lekkernijen ging proeven. My very first “Where the foodie goes” post has arrived and I hope that many will follow. In this new segment, I’ll take you with me on my tour through the city and tell you which places you need to visit, as well as where all the good food is hidden. For my first article, I went to Venice where I’ve tasted from the culture and the tasty Venetian dishes. At the bottom of this article, you’ll find some practical information considering the places I mentioned in this post. Enjoy!
On to Venice
Venetië, bekend van haar grote carnavalsfeest, gondelritjes en kleine steegjes en bruggen. Ik boekte op zaterdag een vlucht om maandag naar dit ietwat mysterieuze eiland te vertrekken. Op zondag plande ik mijn 4 dagen uit, en op maandag vertrok ik naar de luchthaven van Charleroi. Klaar om mijn eerste stappen te zetten in de wereld van het solo reizen. Maandag verliep helaas niet helemaal stressvrij gezien mijn trein vertraging opliep en ik op de luchthaven aankwam, 50 minuten voor mijn gate sloot. Geen zorgen! Ik was mooi op tijd – ik had zelfs nog tijd om wat tijdschriften in te slaan – en zat om 15u in de lucht, op weg naar Venetië. Na een busrit van een uur en een korte wandeling door het nachtelijke Venetië, arriveerde ik in mijn hotel waar ik die avond vroeg in mijn bed ben gekropen om voldoende uitgerust te zijn voor de volgende 3 dagen.

Venice, famous for her big carnival festivities, gondola rides and small alleys and bridges. I booked my flight on Saturday, ready to leave on Monday to this somewhat mysterious island. On Sunday I planned out my trip, and on Monday I travelled to the airport of Charleroi. Ready to take my first steps into the world of solo travelling. Travelling on Monday wasn’t exactly stress free since my train had some delay which led to me arriving at the airport just 50 minutes before the gate would close. No worries though, I managed to get there one time – I even had some time to buy magazines on the way – and around 3 pm I was on my way to Venice. After a bus ride of an hour and a short walk through the nocturnal Venice, I arrived at my hotel where I went to bed early that night so that I was well rested for the following 3 days.
Tourist for a day
Dinsdag, 8u ‘s morgens. Ik word wakker, plens wat water in mijn gezicht, fatsoeneer mijn haar en vertrek naar het ontbijtbuffet waar ik word begroet door koffiekoeken, taart, fruit, zoet en hartig beleg, cornflakes, yoghurt, noten, zaden etc. Keuze genoeg dus. Na mij aan al dat lekkers tegoed te hebben gedaan, kon ik aan mijn dag beginnen. Het doel: zoveel mogelijk toeristische trekpleisters bezoeken in 1 dag. Op het programma staat het San Marcoplein met het bijbehorende dogenpaleis, de brug der zuchten, de campanile en de San Marco Basiliek, gevolgd door een bezoekje aan het Punta della Dogana en de Santa Maria della Salute. Daarna verder naar de Scuola Grande di San Rocco en de Chiesa Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. Even op adem komen bij Gelateria Alaska en dan inschepen op vaporetto (de waterbus) 1 die mij over het Canal Grande vervoerde. Heen en terug. Eindigen deed ik in Tratoria del Pontini.

Tuesday, 8 am. I wake up, splash some water in my face, put some gel in my hair and go to the breakfast room where I’m greeted by pastries, cakes, fresh fruit, sweet and savoury toppings, cornflakes, yogurt, nuts, seeds etc. Plenty of choice! After I enjoyed a lovely breakfast, I was ready to kick my day off. The goal: To visit as many tourist hotspots as possible in 1 day. The program starts with a visit to San Marco square with its Doge’s Palace, Campanile and the San Marco basilica, followed by a visit to Punta della Dogana and the Santa Maria della Salute. After that, it’s on to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and the Chiesa Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. A little stop to get some gelato at gelateria Alaska and then boarding on vaporetto 1 (the water bus) which travels the Canal Grande, back and forth. To end the day, I had a bite at Trattoria Pontini.

In de zomer is dit plein beladen met toeristen – en duiven – die allemaal wedijveren om de mooiste foto’s. Nu namen vooral de duiven de overhand waardoor ik zonder al te veel moeite enkele mooie kiekjes kon maken. Ik begon met een bezoekje aan het Dogenpaleis wat meer dan de moeite is als je houdt van rijkelijk versierde zalen, kunstwerken van de bekendste schilders die Venetië rijk was en als je graag in de huid van een Venetiaanse gevangene kruipt die de Brug der Zuchten overstak terwijl hij een laatste blik op Venetië wierp. Op naar de San Marco Basiliek die gratis te bezoeken is. Ook hier was het rustig. Geen mensenmassa die mij in de stroom mee sleurde, maar kleine groepjes samengetroepte toeristen die op hun eigen tempo de miljoenen gouden mozaïekjes kwamen bewonderen. Het zou een ongelovige haast doen bekeren! Geen foto’s helaas, want een fototoestel is verboden in de kerk. Oh ja, indien je zelf de basiliek wil bezoeken, vergeet dan niet om je rugzak gratis af te geven aan de balie die verstopt zit in een steegje links van het imposante gebouw! Dit staat duidelijk aangegeven en is verplicht als je het prachtige interieur wil beschouwen. ---
During the summer, this square is fraught with tourists – and pigeons – who are all competing to take the best picture possible. During this time of year however, there were more pigeons than tourists, which gave me the chance to take some nice shots without much trouble. I started with a visit to the Doge’s Palace which is definitely worth it if you enjoy lavishly decorated halls, paintings from the most famous painters of Venice and if you like to assume the role of a Venetian prisoner who crossed the Bridge of Sighs as he took a last look at Venice. On to San Marco basilica which is free to enter. Here, it was calm as well. No crowds who pushed me forward, but a few people who were all enjoying the millions of golden mosaic pieces, as did I. It would make an infidel turn into a saint! No pictures though since it was forbidden to take your camera with you. Oh yes, if you plan on visiting the basilica, don’t forget to drop your backpack at the counter (it’s free of charge!), hidden in an alley on the left of the building. It’s clearly indicated and necessary if you want to enjoy the beautiful interior.

Na een blik te hebben geworpen op Venetië vanop 100 m hoogte (op het platform van de Campanile) en met een foto van de Brug der Zuchten op zak, trok ik verder naar de Punta della Dogana. Dit stukje Venetië geeft je een prachtig uitzicht over de hele baai en was dan ook het perfecte moment voor mijn eerste selfie. Ook de Santa Maria della Salute is een architecturaal pareltje. De achthoekige vorm alleen al geeft het gebouw een erg majestueuze indruk. De Santa Maria della Salute werd gebouwd nadat een enorme Pestplaag Venetië geteisterd had en waarbij vele inwoners het leven hebben gelaten. Het stond symbool voor het overwinnen van deze ziekte. Vervolgens trok ik naar de Scuola Grande di San Rocco waar je getrakteerd wordt op heel wat schilderijen van Tintoretto, een bekend Venetiaans schilder. Hier vind je ook één van zijn meesterwerken, “De Kruisiging” terug. Vergeet ook zeker niet om het gesneden houtwerk van dichterbij te bekijken! De details zijn feilloos. Vlakbij vind je de Chiesa Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari. In deze kerk zijn de graftomben van en Canova terug te vinden, twee andere bekende Venetiaanse kunstenaars. Die van Canova zal je niet gauw vergeten en is zeker de moeite om van dichterbij gade te slaan. In deze kerk zal je ook “De hemelvaart van Maria” terug vinden aan de hand van Titiaan, wat als één van de meesterwerken van Venetië beschouwd wordt. Na alweer een stukje gewandeld te hebben, trakteerde ik mezelf op een ijsje in gelateria Alaska dewelke op TripAdvisor hoog aangeschreven stond. Het tiramisu- en safraanijs (dat overigens naar rijstpap smaakte) waren alvast de moeite waard!

After I took a look at Venice from 100 m high ( from the platform of the Campanile) and with a picture of the Bridge of Sighs on my camera roll, I moved on to the Punta della Dogona. This piece of Venice gives you a marvellous sight on the lagoon and therefore was the perfect setting for my first selfie. The Santa Maria della Salute is an architectural gem as well. The octagonal shape alone gives this building a very majestic look. The Santa Maria della Sallute was built after the black plague ravaged the city which caused the dead of a lot of residents. It was a symbol for defeating the illness in Venice. Thereafter, I went to Scuola Grande di San Rocco which houses a lot of Tintoretto’s paintings. Tintoretto was a famous Venetian painter and his artwork is scattered all around Venice. Here, you’ll find one of his masterpieces “The crucifixion”. Don’t forget to take a closer look at the carved wood pieces on the first floor, they are stunning! Not far, you’ll find the Chiesa Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari which is where you’ll find the tombes of Titiaan and Canova, two other famous Venetian artists. The tomb of Canova is one you most likely won’t forget that fast. Inside, you’ll also find “The ascension of Mary” by Titiaan, which is considered one of Venice’s masterpieces. After having walked a bit more, I treated myself on ice cream in gelateria Alsaka, which was highly recommended on TripAdvisor. The tiramisu and saffron ice cream (which tasted like rice pudding by the way) were definitely worth the walk!

De dag eindigde met een ritje op het Canal Grande waarvoor ik inscheepte op vaporetto 1 die me van de ene prachtige gevel naar de andere voer. Ik had me een plaatsje op het voorsteven van het schip kunnen bemachtigen en kon zo moeiteloos van al het moois genieten. Voor ik naar mijn hotel terugkeerde, nam ik plaats aan een tafeltje aan het water in Trattoria Pontini. Ik bestelde er seppie en nero (een typisch Venetiaans gerecht) met polenta en gegrilde groenten en een karafje rode wijn, hetgeen me €20 in totaal heeft gekost. De bediening was uitermate vriendelijkfor en familiaal en het eten was verrukkelijk. Na afloop zag mijn servet zwart – ik wil niet weten hoe mijn mond er uit zag nadat mijn bord leeg was – en genoot ik nog even na met de resterende rode wijn en mijn boek waarin ik rustig kon lezen. Een echte aanrader dus!

I ended the day with a ride on the Canal Grande for which I shipped onto vaporetto 1 and came across one beautiful façade after another. I was able to seize a seat on the prow of the ship from where it was easy to absorb all the beauty that Venice has to offer. Before I went back to my hotel, I sat down at a table close to the waterline at Trattoria Pontini. There I ordered Seppie in nero (typically Venetian) with polenta and grilled vegetables and a little pitcher of wine, which costed me €20 in total. The service was extremely friendly and familial and the food was delicious. After I’ve finished my plate, my napkin was coloured black – I don’t even want to know how I looked right after I finished my meal – and I enjoyed the rest of my wine while reading a book. I highly recommend this place if you ever come to Venice.

Murano – Burano
Woensdag, 8u30. Ik word wakker, plens wat water in mijn gezicht, fatsoeneer mijn haar en vertrek naar het ontbijtbuffet. Om 10u vertrek ik naar de kade waar ik wacht op de vaporette 4.1 die me naar Murano zal brengen. Ik kocht gisteren een combiticket om 2 dagen lang onbeperkt van de waterbusdienst gebruik te kunnen maken en dit voor €30. Als je weet dat 1 enkel ritje je al €7,50 kost, dan is deze keuze logisch. Een ticket dat geldig is gedurende 24u kost je €20 en is zeker de moeite indien je van plan bent om deze eilandjes te bezoeken.

Wednesday, 8.30 am. I wake up, splash some water in my face, put some gel in my hair and go to the breakfast room. At 10 am I leave to the quay where I wait for vaporette 4.1 to arrive which will bring me to Murano. I bought a ticket yesterday which is useable for 48h and costs €30. If you know that a one-way ticket will cost you €7.50 and you’re planning on using the waterbusses frequently, I recommend you to buy a combi ticket instead. A ticket that’s valid for 24h will cost you €20.

De rit naar Murano van F. te Nova duurt ongeveer 15min en geeft je de tijd om de schoonheid van de baai op te nemen. Murano staat bekend als het eiland van de glasblazers. Het Murano glas is wereldwijd bekend en is van hoge kwaliteit. Dit is ook de reden waarom dat de glasblazers vroeger naar dit eiland gestuurd werden. Op die manier waren zij moeilijker te bereiken en daalde het risico dat het geheim van het Muranoglas gestolen zou kunnen worden. Op het eiland is het Museo del vetro zeker de moeite waard. Ook de Basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato mag je zeker niet links laten liggen! Deze huisvest een prachtige mozaïekvloer en een koepel gemaakt uit dezelfde mozaïek die je in de San Marco basiliek terug vindt.

The ride to Murano from F. te Nova lasts about 15 min which gives you enough time to take in the beauty of the lagoon. Murano is also known as the island of the glassblowers. The Murano glass itself is famous worldwide for its excellent quality. That’s also the reason why they use to send the glassblowers to this island. There they were a lot harder to reach which meant that the risk of the secret of the Murano glass being stolen, was a lot smaller. When you’re on the island, make sure to visit the Museo del vetro. The basilica dei Santi Maria e Donato is worth a visit as well as it houses a beautiful mosaic flour and a dome that’s made out of the same mosaic as those in San Marco basilica.

Burano
Om van Murano naar Burano te reizen, neem je vaporetto 12 aan Faro. Het boottochtje duurt wat langer (ongeveer 35 min), maar Burano is deze rit zeker waard! Eens je uit de boot stapt, word je verwelkomd door huisjes die in alle mogelijke kleuren geschilderd zijn. Elke foto die je hier zal nemen is sowieso een voltreffer. De felle kleuren zouden hun oorsprong vinden in het vissersleven. De vissers waren zo beter instaat om hun huis te herkennen bij mist! Naast de kleurrijke huisjes staat Burano ook bekend om zijn hoog kwalitatief kantwerk! Op het eiland vind je een klein museum terug die je wat meer vertelt over de geschiedenis van het Buranokant en als je geluk hebt, kom je enkele kantklossende vrouwen tegen tijdens je bezoek! Als het je echter niet veel zegt, dan raad ik je aan dit museum vanaf de buitenkant te bewonderen. Vergeet ook zeker je portie Bussolai, buranei of essi niet in te slaan! Deze koekjes zijn typisch voor dit eilandje en zeer lekker!

To get from Murano to Burano, you’ll have to take vaporetto 12 at Faro. The boat ride takes a little longer (around 35 minutes), but Burano is definitely worth the travel! Once you get out of the boat, you’re greeted by houses which are painted in every colour possible. Each picture that you’ll take here will be a hit. The bright coloured houses find their origin in the life of the fishermen. By painting their house in bright colours, they were more able to find it when the mist was dense! Besides the colourful houses, Burano is famous for its high quality lace. On the island, you’ll find a small museum which shows you the history of the Burano lace and if you’re lucky, you’ll come across some lacemaking ladies! If it doesn’t speak to you, I would suggest to just admire the museum from the outside. Before you leave, don’t forget to get your load of bussolai, buranei or essi as they are Typical for Burano and simply delicious!
