Coffee in Ghent

Koffie. Het is meerdere malen mijn persoonlijke redder in nood geweest (vooral tijdens de examenperiodes). Ik drink de mijne over het algemeen zwart, maar als ik een koffiebar binnenstap dan mag het wel wat meer zijn. En koffiebars, die vind je zowat overal, zo ook in Gent. Je zal meteen merken dat enkele van deze hotspots niet per se onder de noemer ‘koffiebar’ vallen. Dit omdat ik me vooral gefocust heb op de plekjes die, naast lekkere koffie te serveren, ook een fijne sfeer en gezelligheid uitstralen. Coffee. It has been a life saver on multiple occasions (especially when I'm having exams). In general, I take my coffee black but if I'm entering a coffee shop I mostly want something a little more special. Luckely there are a lot of coffee shops in Ghent. Some of these places aren't really coffee shops since they serve more than just that. That's because my main focus wasn't to find a coffee shop, but rather to find a nice and cosy place to drink coffee at. Those places can be found below.
Huize Colette
Huize Colette is van oorsprong een chocoladehuis. Logischerwijs is de chocolademelk hier dan ook om bij weg te dromen. De koffie moet echter niet onderdoen! Naast cappuccino en latte serveren ze ook gewaagdere koffies zoals de wittekop (met chocolade en honing). Vraag ook zeker een verwenétagère bij je koffie want deze ligt boordevol lekkers en kost je maar €5! De inrichting doet zeer DIY aan en dat draagt bij tot de gezelligheid. Vooral boven is het gezellig vertoeven in één van de zetels of zachte stoelen. Ideaal om tot rust te komen na een namiddag shoppen!

Huize Colette is a chocolate house from origin. Logically their hot chocolate is to die for. But, their coffees are pretty amazing too! Besides cappuccino or latte, they serve a little more daring coffees as well. A good example is the "Wittekop" (White head) which is coffee with white chocolate and honey. Don't forget to ask a "Verwenetagère" (Treat Shelf) which is full of goodness for only €5! The interior seems very DIY which adds to the overall atmosphere. Especially upstairs it's very cosy and ideal to relax after a long day of shopping.

Beluso
Met Beluso is Gent een stukje Portugal rijker. Naast pastel de nata en empada’s, kan je er ook terecht voor heerlijke koffies. Hoewel de koffiekaart minder uitgebreid is dan bij een rasechte koffiebar, mag je je verwachten aan koffie van topkwaliteit. Eens je Beluso binnenstapt, doen de strakke witte muren je meteen aan witgekalkte zomerhuisjes in Portugal denken wat quasi direct leidt tot een spontane glimlach. De vriendelijke bediening en de verschrikkelijk lekkere pastel de nata zijn de kers op de taart. Een echte aanrader dus!

Since the opening of Beluso, Ghent became a little more Portuguese. Beside a pastel de nata or an empade, you can also get some delicious coffees! Even though the coffee menu isn't that extensive, the coffees that are available are top notch! Once you enter Beluso, the white and clean walls instantly reminds you of the whitewashed summer houses in Portugal which almost instantly makes you smile. De friendly service and their pastel de nata are the cherry on top. Highly recommended if you're in Ghent!

Wasbar
Ondertussen is ‘Wasbar’ een vaste waarde geworden in heel Vlaanderen en dat is niet onbegrijpelijk. Naast een leuke sfeer en origineel concept, bieden ze ook heel wat lekkere dingen aan. Brunch in het weekend, huisgemaakt limonades en koffie! Aan originaliteit ook geen gebrek, waar de cappuccino Wasbar een mooi voorbeeld van is. Dries en Yuri (de twee creatieve breinen achter dit concept) zijn er in geslaagd om de waserette weer hip en trendy te maken. Allen daarheen dus!

Wasbar has become a phenomenon in Flanders and that's easy to understand once you've paid them a visit. Beside the nice atmosphere and the original concept, they also offer a lot of yummy treats. Brunch in the weekends, home made lemonades and coffee! No lack of originality here of which the 'Capuccino Wasbar' is a great example. Dries and Yuri (the two creators of this concept) managed to make the laundry fun again!

Café Labath
Café Labath is een begrip onder de koffieliefhebbers en dat is duidelijk merkbaar. Een lege zaal zal je hier bijvoorbeeld nooit aantreffen, maar dat weegt niet door op de kwaliteit of bediening. Je mag er zeker van zijn dat je koffie hier steeds met een glimlach geserveerd zal worden. Café Labath is een onvervalste koffiebar wat wil zeggen dat je uit verschillende koffiebereidingen kan kiezen die over het algemeen ook van latte art voorzien zijn. Tijdens de zomer kan je op het terras genieten van je koffie en de zon. Wat heb je nog meer nodig?

Café Labath is probably the best known coffee shop in Ghent and that's quite noticable. An empty room is something you just won't find here but that doesn't have any effect on the service or kindness of the staff. Your coffee will be served with a smile! Cafe Labath is a coffee shop by the book which means they serve a wide variety of different coffees which are mostly provided with some nice latte art. During the summer you can hang out on the terrace while enjoying your coffee and the sunshine. What else do you need?
